Scientific and Practical Journal Hirurgia Pozvonochnika (Russian Journal of Spine Surgery) (print ISSN 1810-8997; the Mass Media State Registration Certificate  ПИ № ФС77-74930, 11.02.2019) was founded in 2003 by the Novosibirsk  Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics n.a. Ya.L. Tsivyan.

The founders of the journal are: Federal State Budgetary Institution "Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics n.a. Ya.L. Tsivyan" of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation, and Interregional Public Organization “Association of Spinal Surgeons”.

Hirurgia Pozvonochnika (Russian Journal of Spine Surgery) is the first and only scientific periodical in Russia and the post-Soviet space devoted solely to the questions of spine surgery.

The first issue of the journal was published in April 2004.

In 2005, the journal was accredited by the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and was included in the List of peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Since 2005, the journal's website (www.spinesurgery.ru) is functioning and an electronic version was launched (online ISSN 2313-1497).

Russian vertebrologists are consolidating around the journal, and in 2009 it became the mouthpiece of the Association of Spine Surgeons.

Since 2013, the best papers are translated into English and published as an online digest.

In 2016, the translation of all articles was initiated, and  online issues of English version of the journal are published quarterly.

Since 2018, the journal is indexed in the SCOPUS international abstract and citation database, and since 2020 is included in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) on the Web of Science platform.

The journal is conceived and implemented as a scientific and practical printed publication, which highlights the problems of spinal surgery and related disciplines. The most important tasks of the journal are the summation of scientific and practical achievements in the field of vertebrology, and raising the scientific and practical qualifications of vertebrologists. The journal publishes original articles, results of basic research aimed at studying general pathological processes to improve the treatment of patients, clinical case reports, lectures and literature reviews on a wide range of issues of spine surgery.

The journal is in demand with clinicians and scientists and has a wide geography of distribution. The Editorial Board and the Editorial Council of the journal include leading specialists in the field of vertebrology from Russia and abroad. The first editor-in-chief of the journal was Prof. Nikolay Fomichev.
